Welcome to the first ever #ExtremeAudioPros #audio #production advice thread! Today, we have a look at improving your guitar tone by reamping. This is part 1 of a continuing series, Reamping through common kitchen utensils. Today, we're going to have a look at THE TOASTER. 1/6
The first thing to consider when choosing a toaster is the number of channels. Dual-channel toasters are most common, but quadruple-channel or even larger models are available. The more channels, the more options for your sound, but also the more daunting the possibilities.
2/6
When dialing in your toaster, crank the heat to get those rich, warm, saturated tones that are great for rock and metal. Otherwise, dial it back for a more subtle, sophisticated tone. If you hear any crackling or uneven distortion, it might be time to switch heating rods! 3/6
Mic placement: micing the slit will give you a very direct, almost metallic sound that can get a bit abrasive if you're not careful. Maybe experiment with off-angle micing or choosing a darker mic model. Micing the back will give a richer low end, but can sound hollow. 4/6
Avoid micing the sides, unless you're deliberately going for a more lofi, indirect sound, or if you're trying to capture more of the room ambience. Also, a little compression or limiting goes a long way in reining those sharp transient of the release mechanism activating. 5/6
And that's it for our first in-depth audio production thread here at ExtremeAudioPros! With these tips, you'll be able to take your reamping game and your guitar tones to the next level. Stay tuned for part 2 of this series, where we'll look at THE BLENDER. 6/6
