I don’t know if it’s the sunny weather, the food trucks, or the roller coasters in the background, but I’ve never been at a polling place that has such a carnival-like vibe to it.

Lots of smiles. No complaints. (That’s I’ve heard, at least!)
LaJa Hurt brought her 13-year-old daughter and 2-year-old niece with her to vote.

Hurt says they’re related to @Booker4KY, but that she would have votes for him regardless of the connection:
Well I once again spoke too soon.

Quite a lot of complaints being launched back and forth between those for and against tax increase that would benefit JCPS.
After a tense back and forth between these two women, (pro tax increase in left, anti-tax increase on right), now a handful of sheriff’s officers out here keeping an eye out/managing the crowd. Image
cc: @oliviakrauth (whose reporting I hear referenced in this exchange 👇)
Crowd has thinned out but standoff continues. JCPS teacher Kumar Rashad (blur shirt) is telling voters that the petition is “anti-education, anti-poor.”

“None of them are teachers!”

He has a list of districts that oh more in taxes than JCPS that he keeps reading off. Image
Anti-tax group packs up and leaves.

Theresa Camoriano tells me they think they secured at least 1,000 signatures today. That puts them close 30k, she said. Image
Camoriano:

“I think there’s a big problem in JCPS with bullying. And this is a teacher in JCPS that is being a tremendous bully. We are leaving because we don’t want a problem. And it’s a pity that we can’t exercise our rights because of a bully.”
“He’s complaining that students are getting murdered,” she continues. “Why do students get murdered? Because this is what they’re taught to do.”

🧵 A tale of two books.

I visited a friend over the weekend. Her son is in kindergarten.

He brought each of these books home from school. ImageImage
They both have colorful illustrations and the titles both feel age appropriate for very early readers.

But that’s where their similarities end.

Their differences are important. Because they illustrate a critical piece of the Science of Reading debate. ImageImage
Let’s start with Look for Bugs.

There are two things going on here.

First, you’ll notice the sentences repeat throughout the story, except for the last word.

This is called a predictable reader. ImageImageImageImage

THREAD: I left Jefferson Square Park at 8:40, hoping to run up to the CJ and use the restroom before curfew set in at 9.

As someone who writes about Louisville’s kids for a living, I think it’s important I tell you what happened next.
There was a group of about 40 people hustling to get over to the First Unitarian Church before curfew.

There was a young man with a megaphone, urging folks to stay on the sidewalk and move quickly so that they could make it on time.
Then, a little boy (who looked to me to be about 7 or 8) peeled off from the group, heading back to the square.

His right fist was clenched and he held a wooden stick in his left. A lot of anger coming from a very little body.

Following the #BreonnaTaylor protests in Louisville tonight for @courierjournal.

We’ve got about 75 minutes until curfew. Updates threaded here 👇 Image
The crowd marching down Broadway right now is not as big as it was this afternoon — on foot, at least. Cars are following behind.

There are also folks back at 6th and Jeff.
Crowd of about 100 walking back to Jeff Square. Notably, no visible police presence at the interstate on-ramp.

INBOX: Some news related to Louisville's disconnected/opportunity youth efforts.

@louisvillemayor has made two appointments to expand the city's Office of Youth Development -- which in recent years, as the @courierjournal has reported, was not treated as a priority.

From June: Image
Dr. Aishia Brown has been appointed to be the new Director for OYD, and Dr. Billie Castle has been appointed as a Special Assistant for Resilience and Community Services (RCS) with a special focus in OYD, according to a release from Fischer's office.
Brown will retain a joint position at UofL's School of Public Health and Information Sciences.

“I’m excited to engage in what will be a shift from viewing youth as problems that need to be fixed to agents of change in our community,” she said.

Can't believe how much has changed since this story published on July 13th (and that's saying a lot in 2020!). courier-journal.com/story/news/edu…

But a quick reminder as @JCPSKY starts back virtually tomorrow: These educators miss their kids. ImageImageImage
They wanted to be back. They wanted to make socially distant school work — even though it could put their own health at risk.

And that's the type of people teachers & other public school staff are.

They are selfless, often to a fault.
But when circumstances change, they make it work.

They create Bitmoji classrooms. They green-screen themselves into virtual field trips. They hand-deliver school supplies. They learn how to use Google classroom to support kids traumatized by COVID-19 and murder. Image

Happening now 👇

More than 6,500 staff members are tuned in for @JCPSKY's live virtual kickoff for the 2020-21 school year. Image
Among the morale boosts this morning, a video of students surprising teachers with heartfelt "Thank you" messages. Image
Taking the podium, @JCPSSuper starts by poking fun at himself -- says he has a swollen lip because weekend yard-work resulted in a pretty bad case of poison ivy.

"So, if I drool on myself or anything you will know why I did." Image
