I wonder whether Douthat's claim that conservatism is "steadily more blue collar" will be a continuing trend in the U.S., leaving aside the fact that many working-class Americans are not white and are heavily Democratic. /1

Trump is not even pretending to be an "economic populist" any more. At the Tulsa rally, he bragged about the tax cut for the rich and his deregulatory agenda, and conservative judges. (The one area that might reach blue collar voters was his exaggerated claims about the VA.)/2
I think we are increasingly realizing that Trump's base is as much in the Country Club as in the Midwestern Diner. See @eosnos recent piece in the @NewYorker about Trump supporters in Greenwich, CT./3
I also found this claim puzzling: "Rather than Medicare for All and taxing plutocrats, the rallying cry is racial justice and defunding the police." Rather than either/or, I'm seeing a lot of both/and. /4
For example, there is evidence for a post-COVID surge of enthusiasm for universal health care. /5

It strikes me that many protesters are linking economic and racial justice, and that such demands are shaping the Democratic Party's approach to this election. @michaeltomasky's excellent new piece is relevant here./6
