As was just saying on @BBCNewsnight real feeling that ministers want to turn a page. If so, last chapter has been v difficult reading. Excess deaths from week 11 to mid-June are up 44% in E&W and 93% in care homes.

That's around 65k excess deaths in UK/27k in care homes
To drill down into care homes

Normally from wk11-now we'd expect 29,452 deaths

We've had 56,732

That's around 13% of care home population dying in that period. We'd expect it to be around 6%.
This is a disease where the risks are weighed heavily against our older citizens, in care homes and in the community. As Prof Whitty/Sir Patrick Vallance made clear today, we could be looking at more difficult terrain in the autumn and beyond. 1st Sept only 70 days away.
Remember that we're are at/v close to the time of year when overall mortality is lowest. As we get into autumn, more people start dying again.

Real desire/hope among care sector in particular that government is thinking hard about how to deal with autumn and winter.
