1) The big story in the remarkable new NYT poll is that there is a genuine anti-Trump majority in this country.

On the seismic events rocking the country, majorities disapprove of Trump. These majorities are multi-racial and cut across age lines.

2) The Trumpist mythology is that Trump is whispering to a "SILENT MAJORITY" with his lies about coronavirus and his fearmongering and race-baiting on mass protests.

But on both these fronts, Trump is losing among *white* voters and even among *seniors.*

1) Trump's advisers are targeting a new scapegoat in order to shift blame away from his utterly catastrophic botching of coronavirus: The CDC.

This is deeply depraved on its own.

But there's a backstory here that simply must not get memory-holed.

2) When Trump urged the premature reopening of states, which has helped produce the current spikes, he was defying his own CDC's guidelines and his own government experts!

The idea that Trump and his advisers would now shift blame to them is laughable.

1) Trump gazed in "horror" at the sea of empty seats at his rally, and raged at aides over it, a new report says.

His aides conceded to one another that he had failed to bend reality to his will.

This could go down as an iconic moment.

2) The iconic moment of a modern president losing control of events, and of his public image, is LBJ holed up in the White House, confiding to advisers that his political capital had bled away, as antiwar protesters chanted outside.

The DOJ effort to block publication of John Bolton's book is likely a serious abuse of power. I took a closer look at DOJ's claims about the process with help from a former NSC official, and they don't pass the smell test. New piece:

The declassification process for such books is supposed to be undertaken *in good faith.*

There are legitimately competing public interest imperatives here. But in this case, it's hard to see how the lodestar was what's really in the national interest.

The DOJ's *own lawsuit* recounts that a senior NSC official *cleared* Bolton's book.

And then, *after* that, Trump's current national security adviser had a political appointee at NSC take a second look!
