MUSIC AND SYMMETRY

If you take the "circle of fifths" that represents notes as they are harmonically produced, and then trace the major scale, you get this beautiful symmetrical shape:
If you proceed to draw the classical modal scales, you obtain the same figure, rotated. This rotation shows they are all the same structure, only with a different "emphasis" on its dominant note:
There are quite a few scales that produce symmetrical patterns, with different "amplitudes" within the circle, meaning they venture out farther from the classical structures:
Not all musical scales create symmetry though: many scales are asymmetrical, and this breaking of the pattern is associated with notes that create "tension" in the scale:
A very interesting feature of this kind of representation is that some scales, unrelated musically and graphically, create the same shape when rotated:
More on this topic soon! Including symmetrical and asymmetrical chords, as well as other alternative forms of representation of musical symmetries.
