Thank you to the hundreds of folks who joined us for this #BoFlive event. ❤️

We talked about about self-discovery and human behavior in this follow up to my talk from last week.

This is key, because business is people. All these systems... they only function because of people.
It's related to my thread from yesterday.

Each of us is deciding the world we want to live in with each choice, each day.

Having the ability to do self-investigation and recognize our motivations is critical.
Having the ability to think critically and make conscious decisions is essential to forming the next stage of our society and co-existence.

It's essential to our survival.
When you understand what you want, and why you want it, it also makes it possible to show up in relationship with other people.

It allows you to hear what they want as well, and gives you an opportunity to align those things so we can live more peacefully.

This Twitter + Mastodon “where do we go” moment is a delicious case study on *trade offs*.

If there was ever a time where humans were good at understanding trade-offs and making decisions as a group about them… whew, we have definitely lost it.
Trade-offs, or individuals sacrificing something to gain a different thing (hopefully, something more important/valuable), is what tests the strength and health of a community.
💯 for sure, I don’t mean to sound hopeless.

But this beautiful world where people have healthy online spaces, communication, and relationships… this virtual promise land we want… is really fucking hard to achieve.

This piece about emphasizing what people have “lost” is particularly important.

Folks of color know that a little bit of that particular fear goes a long way. White people are scared of losing power, losing the ability to do whatever they want without consequence…
At a human level, I understand why that fear is such a powerful feeling.

The world as we know it has been tailored to fit the needs of white people at the expense of everyone else.

Modern society is built on centuries of them being at the top of some hierarchy.
Except these are manufactured hierarchies. They are schemes built on violence, theft, and manipulation, not actually some “natural order” of things.

To build it, white ancestors took things that didn’t belong to them and destroyed what got in the way.

It begs to be corrected.

“It turns out that differences themselves do not lead to violence.[…] For a society to fracture along identity lines, you need influential people willing to make discriminatory appeals and pursue discriminatory policies in the name of a particular group.“ time.com/6141468/trump-…
(*Quote shortened for character count)
“If citizens come to believe there is even a small chance that the opposition could become violent, they will turn to a leader who offers them protection, no matter how unscrupulous.”

😂 This made me laugh so hard. I know he’s trolling but this message is clearly not meant for me.

I will never be unemployed, baby. Retired, maybe. But don’t worry, the wokes can come to work with me and my friends.
One more thing. He says: “These companies will outcompete woke companies who are crippled by infighting.”

Do you think people are just screaming at each other on zoom calls all day?

Like, what scene is playing in people’s minds...? I really want to know.
Jason gives us a sneak peek of what hell must feel like for white male leaders. 😩

Seriously though, this entire drama is just the mirror of white men who want to claim their “right to comfort”.

They want to ability to do absolutely nothing about your problems when they please.

Deeply disappointed by the latest Basecamp announcement.

I stand by my recent comments about this historical moment.

Social contracts are being renegotiated. In the process we will discover the limits of many leaders.
Some are not equipped to meet the needs of the people they lead. Some just don’t care.

Either way, it is already giving rise to an entirely different sector of business, leader, and worker. I’m betting on these folks.
What I find particularly interesting is one thing suggested by these statements, but not said explicitly: that the rest of us are uninterested or not interested enough in the success of the businesses we are part of....

This is decent advice, but if you’re a cash-strapped founder looking for people, you have to think about this from a different lens.

Someone who is already being paid a lot of money and considered “top talent” is often unlikely to jump ship for a pre-revenue/pre-funding startup.
That doesn’t mean they won’t contribute something to your efforts, though.

Good advisors (typically for equity) can help you solve highly specialized problems, too.

Use the time you get from them well. Don’t be afraid to share real problems with them.
If they feel attached to what you are doing and you get to the milestone of money coming in, they may considering coming on later.

Remember there are a million ways to build a company — if you’re working with modest means, creativity and resourcefulness is the name of the game.
