This Twitter + Mastodon “where do we go” moment is a delicious case study on *trade offs*.

If there was ever a time where humans were good at understanding trade-offs and making decisions as a group about them… whew, we have definitely lost it. Trade-offs, or individuals sacrificing something to gain a different thing (hopefully, something more important/valuable), is what tests the strength and health of a community.

This piece about emphasizing what people have “lost” is particularly important.

Folks of color know that a little bit of that particular fear goes a long way. White people are scared of losing power, losing the ability to do whatever they want without consequence… At a human level, I understand why that fear is such a powerful feeling.

The world as we know it has been tailored to fit the needs of white people at the expense of everyone else.

Modern society is built on centuries of them being at the top of some hierarchy.

😂 This made me laugh so hard. I know he’s trolling but this message is clearly not meant for me.

I will never be unemployed, baby. Retired, maybe. But don’t worry, the wokes can come to work with me and my friends. One more thing. He says: “These companies will outcompete woke companies who are crippled by infighting.”

Do you think people are just screaming at each other on zoom calls all day?

Like, what scene is playing in people’s minds...? I really want to know.

Deeply disappointed by the latest Basecamp announcement.

I stand by my recent comments about this historical moment.

Social contracts are being renegotiated. In the process we will discover the limits of many leaders. Some are not equipped to meet the needs of the people they lead. Some just don’t care.

Either way, it is already giving rise to an entirely different sector of business, leader, and worker. I’m betting on these folks.

This is decent advice, but if you’re a cash-strapped founder looking for people, you have to think about this from a different lens.

Someone who is already being paid a lot of money and considered “top talent” is often unlikely to jump ship for a pre-revenue/pre-funding startup. That doesn’t mean they won’t contribute something to your efforts, though.

Good advisors (typically for equity) can help you solve highly specialized problems, too.

Use the time you get from them well. Don’t be afraid to share real problems with them.

In the age of "ghosting", we don't have to boycott... we can just not show up. And for good reason.

Our value is undeniable.

Treat people well and compensate them fairly, or you will continue to lose workers. American workers are not lazy and they are not stupid.

They have been stripped of so many benefits that were promised to them, and are now reclaiming their ability to do whatever the fuck they want with their time on earth.

They don't owe shit to this system.

All I have to say about the Coinbase IPO is... I hope that any employees who’ve been unhappy but stuck around are getting rich today. If you’re just catching up... related past thread:

Last night I dropped into a Clubhouse room by Conservatives & Republicans about cancel culture, and while we didn’t get to world peace by the end, it *was* a rare interaction where most people seemed to engage in good faith.

I woke up still processing some of the discussion. There was the typical navigating (without negotiating) what “cancel culture” even means to people, but the conversation was actually centered around corporate responsibility and “what CEOs should do about [X].”

But we also waded into how conservatives feel marginalized. 👀

Also this next Friday 2/12!!!

As a fangirl of @profbrucehood's book "The Self Illusion", I'm thrilled to co-host a conversation with him touching on some its central themes.

If you're a neurology nerd like me, you'll love this. joinclubhouse.com/event/m3YgloAl We should have a drop-in from @davideagleman, as well. Don't miss it!

Shout out to all the folks who found LOVE in 2020. 💕

I was just sharing some things I’ve learned with someone close to me, I want to impart a couple thoughts here.

This is based on my 12+ year relationship (married for 8) with @polotek. ❤️ I think it’s best to think of marriage and long-term committed partnerships as “lifelong romantic friendships.”

People often try to make love stand for so much more than that. Don’t do it. You will be disappointed in the long run.

I’ll tell you why...

This is a popular narrative among many startup leaders and investors.

I do not think this is going to pan out like they think it will. I shared some thoughts on this earlier this year. I wouldn’t change much.

The big thing imho is that most companies have no real plan around how to support a remote workforce.

Which has LITERALLY been covered by TechCrunch more than once and one of the co-founders on the Disrupt stage.... twice.

“Dignified work” is one issue that spans across the political spectrum.

A massive labor movement is inevitable. More people are starting to understand that poverty is really due to policy choices.

Shifting blame to the individual is a red herring.

I wrote “How to launch a company when investors ain’t writing checks” back in 2017, and I would make some minor tweaks today, but not much.

link.medium.com/JaaGyVmencb The high level model here is:
✅ Gather Info.
✅ Gather People.
✅ Prototype.
✅ Monetize.
✅ Execute.
✅ Iterate.

I have to say that I’m floored by how many people connected with this thread on systems.

Let’s talk about systems.

I’m listening to “Thinking in Systems” by Donella H. Meadows.

The book was published posthumously because people thought it was *that important.* The book is gold, and it feels like she wrote this book just for me. Like a cosmic gift.

It confirms so many ideas I’ve only known intuitively, and goes further than what I’ve managed to figure out on my own.

It makes me feel like I’m doing exactly what I should be doing.

Change work is messy. I keep coming back to this thought about "the baby and the bath water."

This is the conversation that I see a lot of us struggling to have, both within communities and across cultural lines.

Harm has run rampant for so long, we can't tell ass from elbow.

The Coinbase drama continues... I’m not gonna lie, this whole thing is so fascinating to me.

I have so many questions after reading this, but I really want to know whether the CEO actually believes the stuff he’s saying in this public note. I cannot overstate the personal risk associated with an employee calling out a well-resourced company in public.

This is not a thing most people do frivolously.
