I feel as if I have been in a cave somewhere. Never have I heard the phrase, "cancel culture" until this week. Now it seems to be everywhere. As is typical, I read up on this curious phenomenon, eager to educate myself on yet another sub-culture of the net and society. My take,
and correct me if I am wrong, is that there is a spectrum of culpability for behavior/actions/words, etc. At one end is no accountability, either because one has done nothing inappropriate or will not accept accountability. Nothing anyone says or does will change that condition
Somewhere in the middle lies accountability; one accepts responsibility for said behavior/actions/words, etc. and makes amends if necessary. At the other extreme is cancel culture. The individual is held accountable by others for some faux pas, actual or imagined, makes amends or
provides explanation for behavior/actions/words, etc. However, in cancel culture, there is no forgiveness because that is not its intent. The motive is to control the behavior/actions/words, etc. of the "offender". This is accomplished by "defenders" harassing, doxxing, stalking,
badgering, manipulating, embellishing, spinning(ie: context of past tweets) and/or utilizing other tools to achieve this goal by any means necessary. Put simply, cancel culture is abusive--it is meant to be. Optimum success of control(abuse) is manifested by the exit of said
"offenders" from their social media platform and/or termination from employment. Complete erasure of their existence. The problem with cancel culture is that the satisfaction gained from its achievement is temporary. The toxicity must be fed. Therefore, as with any abuser,
it seeks another target. So it slithers its way across social media, leaving more casualties in its wake. Until someone decides he/she doesn't want to be a victim anymore and takes their power back.💪🏾 @Sarah_Mojarad @tomfolanmd
