Just in: @Princeton announces that Wilson College — named after Woodrow Wilson — will immediately be renamed First College due to Wilson’s racism.

New letter from Princeton president Chris Eisgruber.
And more significantly — Princeton’s Wilson School, the public policy program, is also being renamed.

The Woodrow Wilson School is now the “Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.”
More from Princeton president Chris Eisgruber:

“Princeton honored Wilson not because of, but without regard to or perhaps even in ignorance of, his racism.

That, however, is ultimately the problem.”
Here is the full memo from Princeton University’s President on stripping away Woodrow Wilson’s name from its public policy school and residential college because of Wilson’s racism.
Would hope that there is great @princetonian coverage to come of the actual behind-the-scenes conversations that led to this decision.

To begin with: Why didn’t Princeton make this decision five years ago? They set up a whole committee and spent months studying it!
Princeton can’t claim that it hadn’t given this issue some thought.

So is it that there is more systemic racism than before?

A new understanding of Wilson’s legacy versus five years ago?

Or a nod to the student activism?

All could be possible, yes, but hope for more scrutiny.
“It’s not just George Floyd’s death, Breonna Taylor’s death, Tony McDade’s death. Why did you all start caring now, when we’ve been asking for these things since as long as I’ve been at Princeton?”
