Life as we knew it is unlikely to come back soon for millions of Americans & frankly, we should be aiming far higher than for a return to "normal.” Because normal was pretty bad for many Americans: nearly 40 million lived in poverty & were food insecure BEFORE Coronavirus.
NOW is the time to actually begin to make changes to our society & economy, changes that will allow everyone the dignity of a living wage, healthcare, education & a safety net for when things don't work out. That's what the "new normal" can look like. #velshi
History will say we did OK during the emergency: we pulled together & overcame partisanship for a minute & found money we believed didn't exist to keep our economy going. Notwithstanding Donald Trump's particular leadership failures, our government works OK during a crisis.
Ultimately, what was wrong with America isn't something that will be fixed through emergency loans & stimulus checks or a return to what was normal. The pandemic exposed a wound that has been festering beneath the surface of our economy for years. #velshi
Our system is fundamentally unequal: it favors corporations over people, rich people over poor people & places the bottom line above the livelihoods of our citizens. That was never great & we shouldn't want to do it again. #velshi
How about we don't work so hard to get back to "normal"? Let's work to make the critical changes we need to build a more just society & a more equitable future for all Americans. #velshi
