Some Atlanta police have called out sick in solidarity with a fmr. officer charged with murdering 27-yr old #RayshardBrooks. Those officers—plus the 57 members of the Buffalo Emergency Response Team who quit & continued collecting taxpayer-funded salaries—are cowards.

To the police protesting justice: If you don’t want to do the hard work of policing, or be answerable to the public that pays your salary, then ACTUALLY quit. Resign. Give up your salary, your benefits & your pension. Protest is cheap if it doesn’t cost you anything.

Putting on a badge, a uniform & a gun doesn’t make you part of a club.
Despite outdated terms like “brotherhood” that show up in the names of police unions, it’s not actually a fraternity. The loyalty of police is pledged to the public & to the law, not to each other. #velshi
Good police—and we’ve seen some of you in the last few weeks—are being drowned out by a network of unions that silences those who speak out against wrongdoing in their ranks. Police who confront or report other police are ostracized. #velshi
For the sake of the public, and for the sake of good cops, we need unions to loudly & unabashedly disavow bad cops, not protect them. Unions should not support & reward police who do not do their jobs.

Police unions should stand up for good cops: protect their wages, keep their working conditions safe & insist upon the highest levels of training for our complex world. Unions that protect racist & bad cops are an affront to America’s rich legacy of organized labor. #velshi
Policing in America will change, whether police want it to or not.
That change cannot be stopped. People are tired & fed up of being targeted. America will choose justice & equality. It’s time for the police unions to get in front of that. #blacklivesmatter #velshi
