An unmarked NYPD cruiser struck a black teenager on Halloween.

When this writer tried to find out more, he learned how the NYPD is shielded from accountability for their many abuses.

Some examples of their egregious abuses:
•NYPD arrested Black/Latino boys at alarming rates while the kids were doing age-appropriate activities.
•They were randomly selected and charged w/out legitimate reason.
•The NYPD didn’t notify parents.

Abuses, contin’d:

• Children were held for running from plainclothes officers.
• Event descriptions were changed to meet officers’ needs to avoid accountability: the unmarked NYPD cruiser striking the kid turned into the kid running into the police car despite witnesses.
A NY school founder believes as many as 40% of kids have been stopped by the police.

In fact, so many children are stopped by police that instructions on how to handle being stopped are on the back of the school ID cards.

There were huge alarms regarding accountability:
The disciplinary board initially considered of three deputy police commissioners. Hardly independent or groundbreaking.

The civilian board now has about 200 staffers. Its investigators dig deep into cases.

As for the original case on Halloween which prompted this story, there are still no answers.

This speaks volumes.

Juvenile justice reform is a critical societal need in the U.S.

Where to start?
