Trump tried to “negotiate a deal” with the Taliban last year. Tried to invite them to Camp David before that all fell apart.
If the American bloodshed escalated though, Trump could claim a deal - any deal - was a feat of his amazing diplomacy.

It will not surprise me to learn that Trump knew and did nothing because he saw Americans being wounded or killed in action as actually helpful to him personally.
