Today we bid farewell to our deputy commanding general for Operations, Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Donahoe. He's better known in these parts as @PatDonahoeArmy. He came to us from @drum10thmtn in late 2018, and as he departs today, he's leaving us a better organization. THREAD! 
Eighth Army has a long and proud history - but not much attention went into the days before June 25, 1950 - the start of the Korean War. The "O" changed that - and last year's 75th anniversary celebration was in large part a result of his drive and reverence for our past.
He led the effort to change the enduring narrative of Korea as a solo hardship tour, He turned that around, leading the #AssignmentofChoice initiative, showing Soldiers and families the new facilities, top schools, and the 15 hour head start to their Asian bucket list travel.
He wanted the best leaders in Korea, and once they got here, he wanted to have a part in developing them. Cdr/1SG Course, S-3/SGM Course, Best Warrior Competition competitors - they all got a piece to take away from MG Donahoe.
When COVID-19 came to Korea, he used his social media following to communicate clearly, effectively, and directly on behalf of the command. The Army has used his style of engagement as a best practice to touch the formation once the virus' spread reached the continental US.
He told us what we needed to hear, not what we wanted to hear. For those of us in contact with him on a daily basis, he had high expectations, and he held us to them. When we didn't get there, he made sure we knew - and then gave us another shot to get it right.
He is, without a doubt, a one of a kind guy. How many general officers do you know that will get into it on Twitter with municipalities?!?

MG Donahoe heads back to the US to take command of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at @FortBenning, GA. We deeply appreciate everything he's done for the #AmphibiousEighth and for the Soldiers and families here in Korea. Good luck, sir! #SoldierOn!
