🗣 Why we need to care about EACH and EVERY Gun Death in America because #EndingEverydayGunViolence is the first step towards building strong and vibrant communities: A THREAD. 1/?
Beginning in 2005, the City of Milwaukee began reviewing every single case of local gun violence in the city limits.
The reviews have a three pronged approach: law enforcement, community resources, and research according to he Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. 2/?
While reviewing these deaths may seem like an obvious step to take when we are talking about precious lives, activists in cities like Chicago have been calling on their city council for YEARS to implement community reviews through a centralized Office of Violence Prevention. 3/?
Now back in Milwaukee, these community reviews provided amazing intelligence to community leaders and policy-makers to create innovative gun violence preventio strategies. (Why we should always to GVP activists first!) 4/?
Policymakers in Milwaukee were able to see that 10% of all local gun deaths occured near local taverns. This caused the city to issue an ordinace for bars/taverns to set up safety monitoring cameras on all entrances to their bars. (cc: @Everytown) 5/?
As a direct result, Tavern-related homicide deaths fell by 80% by 2014, only 9 years after the policy went into place. READ MORE HERE: projects.jsonline.com/news/2019/9/25… 6/?
By implementing a policy with the understanding that EVERY single person's life matters regardless of their zip code, Milwaukee was able to make a positive impact on their citizen's lives to #EndGunViolence. 7/?
#EndingEverydayGunViolence is possible by listening to activists to make informed policy decisions that use data to turn every single preventable death into a step towards a gun violence free future. ✊ 8/8
