Myth: #Chilli was brought to India by the Portuguese 500 years ago

Reality: Chilli existed in India even before the arrival of the Portuguese.

If Portuguese had brought chilli to India, then we would have had only the few varieties of chillies that they had imported into India.
But, if we look at the food habit of India, chilli has been cultivated and consumed all across India, for centuries. There are a wide variety of species, with different colors, shapes, flavours, and spiciness.
While pepper is known as Marici in Samskrt, there was another word, Maricika for chilli.
It is also mentioned and used in the traditional cuisine of all parts of the land.
Each region of India has its own well known varieties of chilli.
There are supposed to be over 400 varieties of Chilli in the world. Of these, over 70 different varieties grow in just one state of India called Andhra Pradesh. So, imagine the number of varieties of chillies growing in India itself.
All these varieties of chillies have been in use, in the cuisine of the respective regions, since many centuries.
