Join us and @AmerQuarterly at 1 p.m. ET for a conversation with @thiamparo and @AuroraVergaraF1 on the movement for racial equality and justice in Latin America.
We're LIVE with @AmerQuarterly's @BrazilBrian, Icesi University's @AuroraVergaraF1, and Fundação Getúlio Vargas' @thiamparo, who will share insights on how the Black Lives Matter movement has sparked grassroots momentums across the region.
@AuroraVergaraF1 says there’s a hope his story will help bring the requests civil society organizations have been making around police brutality against Afro-descendant Colombians to the national debate.
999 = People killed by police in all of the U.S. in 2019, by contrast, says @thiamparo, who points to a type of militarized policing.
@AmerQuarterly@BrazilBrian@AuroraVergaraF1@thiamparo “We're looking at a very difficult time for Afro-descendants across the region” during COVID-19, says @AuroraVergaraF1, highlighting the case of one Afro-descendant Colombian doctor in a vulnerable area who, at the time he passed away from the virus, hadn't been paid in 7 months.
There’s a trend of bringing in Black people to talk about racism only when it’s convenient, says @thiamparo.
I know people who are excellent political analysts but because they are Black women or Black men, they are not called about politics or economics generally.
1/3
There’s a saying among Black feminists that usually only white men are considered “universal” beings who can talk about any issue, says @thiamparo, and that if a Black person like myself opens my mouth, I’ll probably talk about something in a racialized way.
2/3
The conversation is hard in Brazil because we can't have an in-depth conversation about race across different topics.
We need to go beyond only talking about race after a big event like George Floyd or one month of the year and mainstream the conversation.

"Investment for all of us in a secure, stable, prosperous hemisphere is so important."
Often young democracies and sometimes weak institutions are under assault from corruption, transnational criminal organizations, money laundering, and cryptocurrencies.
60% of all cryptocurrency in the world is in the Western Hemisphere, says Admiral Faller of @Southcom.
