Louisiana adheres to free market Austrian economics, trickledown strategy, promotes personal responsibility over state welfare, and is one of the wealthiest states in the US because of this ideology.

That wealth is concentrated in the control of the elite who own the corporations that operate in Louisiana and the corporate shareholders.

While it won’t be exactly the same, this is the style of dystopia that Kenney & UCP have planned for Alberta. The parallels are unmistakable.

Kenney has already provided $4.7B in tax breaks which came out of tax revenue. Providing justification for the draconian budget cuts he’s been implementing since October when the new budget was announced.
Education, healthcare, infrastructure, community services all suffer severe cutbacks because taxes are not collected on the largest industries.

Translation: by giving tax breaks to large corporations, justification for further budget cuts is made.
The goal is to eliminate all tax funded programs & services. (Well, the ones for the people who live here).

Of course those services and programs will continue to be offered, privately. Either through faith based charity or in for profit businesses. That’s what libertarians call diversification.

Transition to a free market economy is not yet complete, so additional measures need to be implemented before Alberta can reject federal transfers. But it’s clear the intention is to move to privately funded healthcare and education models funded additionally by public funds. 
First the starvation of public safety net (public services & universal programs) needs to be more extensive.
That requires reducing taxes for corporations and small businesses to further reduce the tax revenue and make more draconian cuts.

Only then will the Albertan population accept privatization. Out of necessity for the services and programs (healthcare & education), not because of a change in ideology. Those incapable to pay user fees and tuition will be left to public programs woefully underfunded.
The result will be health outcomes and education outcomes similar to Louisiana’s current 50th place standing. And poverty levels similar to Louisiana.
In the long term, UCP plans to collect federal & provincial taxes. Then remit what UCP believes to be sufficient.

Kenney’s strategy can be seen easily in economic recovery plans. Look at the difference in allocation of recovery funds. Just over $1B for all citizens healthcare and education during a deadly pandemic vs around $5.5B for O&G industries, construction and infrastructure.
Clearly, the priority is economic recovery for male dominated industry and not to strengthen female dominated service sector.
This ensures corporations and business interests are primary and clears a path for privatization of service sector. COVid will not wait for funding.

The next wave of COVid will be mostly funded inadequately. All the while reducing the tax revenues collected from those industries benefitting from the natural resources in Alberta.
The plan is to implement an 8% corporate tax. Fully 1/3 less than the amount corporations were paying April 1, 2019 (lowest in Canada at 12%). In 15 months, Kenney has reduced tax revenue significantly. Additional exemptions bring revenues down even lower.
Who suffers? Healthcare and Education and the residents who rely on these services for survival and opportunity.
Who benefits? Corporations and businesses whose tax burdens are reduced and provided corporate welfare at Albertan taxpayer expense.

Kenney & UCP haven’t created a single job since coming to power in April 2019.
In fact, Alberta lost more jobs under UCP pre-COVid than any other jurisdiction in Canada. Covid just made it worse.
Industries are being supported, not people. Temporary jobs for a dying industry.
