Now that the deadline to extend the Brexit transition period has expired, expect all the horrific truths about Brexit to come tumbling out. No need for the Tories to hide stuff now!

Probably also worth reminding ourselves that HMRC's own estimate of the additional cost of Brexit red tape is £7.5 billion to firms in the UK, and another £7.5 billion to EU firms.

In other words, the added paperwork alone outweighs our membership fees.

With today being the last chance to extend the Brexit transition period, it felt like the right moment to look back at what we used to have as EU members.

(Some of the things on this list might end up being replicated in an eventual deal. But none will by default.)
1. Membership of the largest single market and customs union in the world. (In 2019, UK exports to the EU were worth £300 billion, 43% of all UK exports. UK imports from the EU were worth £372 billion, 51% of all UK imports.)
2. Free trade deals with over 50 countries around the world, including Japan, Canada and Mexico.

3. The freedom for UK citizens to travel, work, study and retire anywhere in the EU. They keep this right even if they move from one EU country to another, or back to the UK.

Bear in mind that the scale of the EU's proposed recovery fund, at £680 billion, is nearly 3x what the UK has paid in dues in the whole of its 47 year membership.

Apples & oranges to a degree, but it helps contextualise the importance of Brexit vs the pandemic to our neighbours.
Consider too that in the last 4 years, the EU has expanded its trade in goods by more than ALL the trade it does with the UK. In other words, even if it were to sell nothing to us and buy nothing from us (a ludicrous scenario) it would still be better off than at referendum time.
