The exploitation of garment factory workers is horrific & the reason I buy almost exclusively second hand. But notice the abscene of people saying "but child labour and horrible conditions for adults feed families so how dare you call for boycott" like they do with #prostitution?
There is literally no argument for #prostitution, as in anything that it provides that could remotely outweigh the harm it causes to the women in it. The only argument there is is that dismantling the industry is complex as is making sure the affected people are taken care of.
But same as with garment factory workers a lot of women in prostitution make barely enough to live. Many started as children! Many make less as time goes by and may end up too exhausted, sick and/or traumatized to continue. Yet we're supposed to let this industry just be.
If you believe that #prostitution needs to stay for the primary reason that it feeds families then you have no argument against child labour, exploitation in garment factories, in mining, in agriculture. It all feeds families so we can't boycott it/ criticize it if we're coherent
The wealth of the richer nations on the planet depends on the poverty of the poorer ones. Prostitution depends on men having excess wealth and women being poor. None of these industry are an answer to poverty or seek to lift people out of poverty - they depend on its continuance!
If you ask me we can absolutely abolish luxury goods. Nobody needs diamonds. Wear fucking stained glass! Nobody needs hyper expensive clothes, cars, houses, etc. We don't need the amount of meat we eat. We also absolutely do not need #porn or #prostitution. 🤷🏻‍♀️
We also don't need this many mass produced cheap goods. Like the linked thread up above I realize that cheap goods are also bought by the poor so this is not about telling everyone to stop consuming. I also realize we need structural solutions - not individual consumer choice.
The dismantling of these systems is complex because it's an absolute hostage situation. With some products of both the consumer and the worker who suffers but also has no alternatives. But we do not throw our hands up. We seek solutions. Let's do the same with the sex trade.
