HOW DO I POSITION MYSELF
It's Important to know that scholarship is an opportunity sort by hundreds of thousands of smart students, hence preparation is the key and prerequisite to successful applications.
INFORMATION is the major tool for positioning, you need to be well informed by positioning yourself close to every possible source of scholarship available.
Example includes page like mine and others platforms committed to helping students on international scholarships, social blogs, friends who are scholarship enthusiastic, LinkedIn profile of scholars and email subscriptions (highly effective)
HOW DO I PREPARE MYSELF?
It's important to define why you want scholarship and so important to know what you want
PhD or Masters, UK, Germany, Canada or USA among other options, full funding or tuition waiver.
Masters Degree Preparation
You must clearly state the field of study are intending to explore, the country convenient for you; many would say any country is fine so far it's in the abroad..
have you considered the cost or living in the city, racism, proximity to centered location and lots more.
Who will be responsible for you funding, this is highly important. Will you fund yourself by external schemes or internal funds in form of Teaching and Research Assistant?
Don't make the mistake of gaining admission and afterward start looking out for funds. Securing Admission is not that complex, the question is who will fund you?
You need to make some Documents available and they includes;

- Bachelor's/HND Certificate
- Academic Transcript
- Letter of English Proficiency or Equivalent proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL
- At least 3 lecturers or professional supervisors that can write beautiful recommendations for you.
- GRE will definitely increase your chances in American and Canadian Universities but most schools are currently waiving it due to the COVID-19, you can follow this #GRExit to schools that waived this test already.
- Professional Certification if available
- Curriculum Vitae
- Statement of Purpose; it's very vital and important now the GRE is gradually fading off
- International Passport
- Awards of both Academic and Leadership is essential if available but not compulsory.
Your Ambition and goals are second to that of the funding bodies, hence don't be rigid in the choice of course or research topic in the developed countries, course title doesn't neccesarily define what the course entails.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED SKILLS
- Good writing skills; you just avoid errors and typos as possible as you can. Many are looking for the same slot and position with you hence any mistake that can cost you the great opportunity should be avoided.
- Marketing strategy; you've to sell yourself to the admission committee, don't be shy to showoff your past achievements but be modest.
Whosoever that would read your essay has not met you before, your essay is the only medium they can get to know you, so make good use of it.
BEFORE YOU APPLY
- It's important to read the vision, goal and requirements of every scholarship opportunities before applying as this will give you insight on how to tailor your write ups and water your strength as every scholarship have different vision and targetted audience.
Go extra to make your applications distinct, take online courses, safety courses and attend seminar and conferences
Please Note: It's very important before attempting to apply at all, for at least two months read two scholarship motivational letters daily. There are alot available on the internet. You can search "motivational letter for Oceanography"
Contact people ahead of time to seek guidance and help to proofread your write ups
FILLING YOUR APPLICATION FORM
- Don't leave your applications late to fill, the admission and scholarship windows are always opened for at least 2-3 months (most opening commence by September), don't allow procrastination to set in!
Start your applications early, small steps at a time. Almost all applications enables you to save your progress and continue later
Write and rewrite your essays and please don't write in a rush, such essays are easy to spot
Don't be selfish with your essay, less of ME and MYSELF rather, more of the WORLD, my GENERATION and COMMUNITY.

Recommendation letter for applications should include;
- Name of the Referees
- Institution email address of the referees e.g Olorunjuedalo@futa.edu.ng
- Position of the Referees e.g Professor/ Doctor of philosophy/ Senior Lecturer etc.
- Signature of the Referres
Please note getting Scholarships involves hardwork, Scholarship Bodies are not NGOs or freelancers. They would like to see value for what they will be investing on, so take your time to stand out and shine bright!
