As the text of the story notes, the patients were not selected randomly, and they had other differences in their treatment regimens. The patients selected for hydroxy treatment also got double levels of steroids.
At a time when coronavirus is spiking, it's incredible that a news organization would negligently spread false medical information so certain to be amplified by bad faith actors.
CNN.com reporters properly explained the study's defects. The headline on the CNN.com website is adequate too. Blame @CNN social media group for this misleading item now being retweeted by pro-Trump apologists.

The very first rule of elections: those exciting things you & your highly committed, ultra-partisan friends care about? Those are not the things the decisive voters care about.
EG I care a lot about Trump's abject subordination to Vladimir Putin. I regard it a supremely important concern for the security and sovereignty of the United States.

But I must recognize that the voters who will deliver the White House care first about health and jobs.

Suppose you agreed with this. Suppose you agreed too that statues/memorials mattered more than Trump's failures on pandemic, economy, racial justice.

All below HAPPENED ON HIS WATCH. He's asking for a 2nd term to redress failures of his own 1st.

Trump has zero interest in doing anything about statues/memorials. He wants his base upset by and angry at TV images of commotion at statues/memorials. He wants to profit from disturbance, not protect against disturbance. He wants to yell at the TV, not do his job
Which explains why he blurs lawful civic decisions to retire/replace local monuments with mob violence, with nuisance graffiti, with the publication of books and articles critical of American history. It’s all about yelling at the TV, not about upholding any value or principle
