Trump abuses a stimulant. This is clear from transient physiological (mydriasis/dilated pupils, sweating, shortness of breath, snorting, slurring, dysarthria/motor speech abnormalities, and abnormal motor movements) and from behavioral signs (euphoria, grandiosity, verbosity).
The mydriasis under bright lights is the confirmation tell. @DrGJackBrown has covered this in depth.
A stimulant helps Trump have the confidence, invincibility, elevated mood to be animated and entertaining when public speaking. It’s characteristic for narcissists to storytell where they can boast, brag about fake achievements, be the center of attention, all while manipulating.
Too much stimulant and Trump gets more grandiose, off track, more incoherent, generally well exceeding his natural disjointed narcissistic riffing. This gets him into trouble with unscripted, improvised, inappropriate remarks. This can’t happen at solemn or international events.
In order to stay with the teleprompter Trump needs to be benzodiazepine heavy which he was last night. Benzodiazepines affect GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. Benzo heavy and Trump’s low energy, boring, slowed, sedate, sluggish, monotone, flatter affect.
Stimulant heavy and he’s well — high. These speeches are “crazy, off the wall, rambling, incoherent, loose.” Stimulant heavy he becomes even more tangential in his story telling, sometimes reaching a point and sometimes not. He’s animated in facial expression and gesture.
The slurring and mispronunciations (dysarthria) are from both stimulants and benzos, therefore these occur regardless of the drug balance. The stimulant can cause abnormal motor movements affecting both voluntary and involuntary movements. Benzos don’t counter this well.
Last night was Benzo/GABA heavy. Somnambulant. Great word.
