A 50 acre woodland would juat have been felled nearer Wem at Lacon, and taken to make earth and timber ramparts around the town...
The houses outside the new rampart walls would have been flattened...
A tiny garrison of 40 soldiers would be preparing to defend the town... The hinges were missing from the new gates, and the preparations were not ready... The women of the town were put in red coats ans placed strategically to look like soldiers..
So confident of victory was the royalist commander of the forces attacking Wem, we was goofing about smoking a pipe half way between this hall and the town of Wem..
And yet... The attack was resisted, and only 3 were lost from the parliamentary side, with heavy losses from the Royalist side....
