Interesting report @apoorva_nyc. Many aspects are✅. SARS-coV2 can have airborne transmission in certain circumstances. Both the U.S. CDC (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…) and the European CDC (ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/…) already acknowledge the possibility of airborne transmission. 1/8
The WHO statement on airborne transmission during aerosol generating procedures (AGP) is targeted to acute healthcare facilities. AGPs like represent the highest risk exposures when treating know cases of COVID-19 in hospitals. who.int/publications/i…. This is correct ✅. 2/8
There is tremendous evidence that treating pts w COVID-19 using droplet and contact precautions in developed settings is safe if adequate administrative and environmental controls are already in place (Reducing amount of people in small areas and increasing air exchanges). 3/8
Developing countries can achieve similar adequate administrative and environmental controls without big investments 💪. For example, adding extra windows to create cross-ventilation. 4/8
There is tremendous experience and opportunities in developing settings to reduce risk of nosocomial transmission of COVID-19 as these strategies also work to prevent TB transmission. For more examples on simple environmental modifications, see: bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11… 5/8
The concern for airborne transmission will have the most impact outside of the hospital. In offices, schools, bars, etc. where people are likely the most infectious: pre-symptomatic or pauci-symptomatic stages and not aware 🗣️. 6/8
Indoor venues will need to modify the number of people and air handling to increased safety during the pandemic and beyond as outlined in both U.S. (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…) and European CDC guidelines (ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/…) 7/8
More thoughts on where and when to consider airborne transmission of COVID-19 can be found here: haicontroversies.blogspot.com/2020/06/covid-… 8/8
