The amazing thing

about discussing companies and investment principles on Twitter

is that you get to learn at the rate of the network.

#grateful

#edge
This is exactly the sort of learning that I mean

Transparency is a force multiplier for learning

Huge respect to @7AustinL for his candid take

It's hard to apply what we "know" when reality makes contact with our plans

Self-reflection is a superpower

Reflecting on process error helps us improve

It truly is easy to be your own worst enemy

By behaving like a trader

when your intent is to be an investor

Motivation, Mindset, Failure and Luck

Losing in order to win - thoughts for new investors

[Thread]

I started investing in July 2017

I had £20,000 / $25,000 saved

I had realised that we were in a middle-class trap & wanted to change our future
MOTIVATION

I spent my 20s working on a business idea that failed

The saga had cost a lot of time, energy & money. It put a big strain on my relationship

It put me in a financial hole that had taken years to dig out from. I ended up at a big consulting firm
I consulted to the UK's National Health Service but I wasn't always convinced about the value for money being delivered through our projects

I ended up switching sides & working for the NHS

Less travel, more relationship time

Job security & a stable income

How to avoid selling your winning stocks too early

I sold $SHOP $SHOP.CA in 2018 after a year

- stock is over 6x in price since then

I sold more than half my $TTD on a +40% day in 2018

- it's up over 10x since then

I don't sell my winners anymore

This is how I approach it Image
Compounding only works if you keep the stock in your portfolio

If you are a LT focused investor

selling out of long term winners with secular tailwinds

when the market cap is small vs the opportunity

the thesis is intact

and the company is executing beautifully

is DUMB
Obviously, if you are buying a beaten-down turnaround type stock, you'll need different sell criteria.

This process is for the fast-growing compounders that I talked about yesterday

short report by Citron is unsurprising

There are some significant unanswered questions that will be interesting to monitor

The concept sounds great but investment is at its core

is a bet on the management team

I don't know the truth but can see why it draws skepticism
After this week

and Theranos back years ago

Some caution is warranted with strong claims but limited evidence.

No position in but if it does work it sounds compelling

But does it work?

And do the unit economics support the biz plan?

(no position, but curious)
is currently still respecting the uptrend channel on a 2hr chart.

Citron shorted and$NVDA in the past 5 years.

All of which have done well if you simply stayed long.

I have no strong opinion on whether it's an opportunity or not Image

It has been a volatile month, with big moves in two of my larger positions and .

Monthly performance is down from last month due to losing a third of its value post ER.
I am ok with this and happy with what is in my portfolio.

The effects of decline have been cushioned to a degree by rises in the stock prices of and .

Stocks go up, stocks go down.

It’s the companies and their execution over the long term that matter in the end
