Sharing a story that's not quite related to those old photos. One day my mom reminded me of the famous story after I was born.

I was born in rare conditions called 𝐸𝑛 𝐶𝑎𝑢𝑙 𝐵𝑎𝑏𝑦 or 𝑉𝑒𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝐵𝑖𝑟𝑡ℎ (a condition when the baby comes out still inside
an intact amniotic sac or caul. This might make it look like the newborn is completely gift-wrapped in a soft, jello-like bubble. And this rare thing of beauty happens in less than 1 in 80,000 births), and 𝑁𝑢𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑟𝑑 (y' all can google it).
So I was born in a "bubble" and, because of the 𝑛𝑢𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑, I was born in a dark-purple color (perhaps because it choked me so I couldn't breathe at all). My mom and my big sis sometimes called me "ungu" or "purple" to tease me. I don't know what inspired them to do

I am #grateful for the opportunity given by #IWS_Network to share my story, struggles and success in the voices without frontiers (VWF).
My name is Betelhem, most people call me Betty and I prefer it that way. I was born 27 years ago to a young couple in AddisAbeba, the capital of #Ethiopia. #IWSVoices 1/n Image
My mom and me rather look like sisters. Despite being a teenager when she got me, she sacrificed her whole life to raise me up. She made sure I had the best #education possible. I am forever grateful to my mom sis & do everything to make her and God #proud. #IWSVoices 2/n Image

A THREAD of #Gratitude to greet the day! As many of you know, I start every day with such a post. Today’s moment is ths vivid expression of awe & wonder frm ths precious child. (Thank you for yr post, Mum Lisa.) Her expression shows us somethng fundamental abt human emotionality.
2. Don’t miss how, at .01, the pitch & volume of her voice rises with excitement about t waterfall. So does her hand & arm. Both rise. Her body is ^coordinated* in its emotional experience of t world. That is key to her expression of her emotions & our ability to perceive them.
3. That vocal-bodily coordination is what infant psychologist Colwyn Trevarthen calls “Communicative Musicality”, in his groundbreaking 2009 book. It explores the “intrinsic musical nature of human interaction.”…

It was lunch time in #Brazil on a Saturday in 1990 when I decided it was time to be born! I grew up in a large city in #SãoPaulo called #Guarulhos, which in Tupi (native language) means “eaters” or “big-bellied people”. Here’s the proof I am “Guarulhense”:

Our #family was not wealthy, but my parents made sure I had good #education, even if that meant sacrificing part of their own life. For that I will be forever #grateful. They made sure I learned how to #appreciate everything I had that money could not buy.

I loved learning about #science in school. Not only because it is #fascinating, but also because my biology teacher, Diógenes (@spock_alvo), had great #enthusiasm when teaching it! His motivation would #inspire me to fall in 💜 with the 🧠! #teachinggoals

I’m level 37 ✨✨✨
Celebrating that I’ve been keeping myself alive - and well - for the last 37 years living with type 1. This month marks my #Diaversay. As I don’t know the exact day of my #diagnosis - it was at the beginning of the summer break - I have decided it's July 7 🎉 Image
I had been having the usual symptoms for some time before I arrived at my grand parents for the holidays: weight loss, unquenchable thirst, constant peeing. My grandma realised something was wrong and took me to the GP.

#type1diabetes #invisibleillness #diagnosis
I thought I’d share a throwback picture to remind me how far I’ve come with living with #T1D for 30+ yrs: rigid treatments in the 1980s, denial in my teen yrs, hiding to inject my life saving #insulin, 1st pump in 2009, 1st #CGM when I was pregnant in 2010, & looping last yr 🟢 Image

The amazing thing

about discussing companies and investment principles on Twitter

is that you get to learn at the rate of the network.

This is exactly the sort of learning that I mean

Transparency is a force multiplier for learning

Huge respect to @7AustinL for his candid take

It's hard to apply what we "know" when reality makes contact with our plans

Self-reflection is a superpower

Reflecting on process error helps us improve

It truly is easy to be your own worst enemy

By behaving like a trader

when your intent is to be an investor

2. The interest in my tweet ths morn on Mary Lily Walker leads me to add a few more insights. Her memory had been largely forgotten until 2013, whn a group of her fans held a 3-day event to mark t centenary of her death. We publishd ths biography: “Forgotten Visionary of Dundee”. Image
3. Here’s a pic from the biography: Our group of researchers standing at her gravesite in Balgay Cemetery. I remember when we didn’t even know were her grave was. I now go up to visit her for a chat & ask her advice regularly. Image

@JAMA_current is celebrating 40 years of "A Piece of My Mind" narratives with this special issue with a few of the many beautiful stories shared over the years.

I'm included with some of my favorite writers in this issue.

When I wrote this essay "The Nod", I held on to it for 2 full years. Out of fear, mostly.

Even though I knew it was important, it meant so much to me when it was accepted.

I cried when I saw that it was chosen again.
I am crying now.

I feel so seen.
Do you have a story to tell?
Tell it.

Do you have a unique voice?
Use it.

Do not be afraid. Your lens matters. Your story matters.
You matter.

1/8 This weekend I am reflecting on what 🇨🇦’s #COVID19 cases and deaths mean in human terms. There is so much behind these daily numbers, it is almost impossible to encapsulate in words.
2/8 Each one of the cases counted has been an illness, striking fear and concern in a person and their family, friends and community. Each death has been an incalculable tragedy – requiring goodbyes from a distance. #COVID19
3/8 It is in these unimaginable tragic situations, that we are most thankful for everyone on the frontlines of this crisis. Offering comforting words, human connection & healing touches. #COVID19

3/5 I would also like to acknowledge the leadership, support and wisdom of my provincial & territorial medical officer of health colleagues - their collaboration has made us all stronger in leading 🇨🇦 through the rough terrain of #COVID19

Just did quite a bit of coding for my website, all by myself, and I'm freakin' proud of me
Even my teenager son is impressed

A few interesting things I learnt while reshuffling my website - a major effort triggered by the Covid catastrophe and the need to refocus my work
#website #blog #LearningExperience
First, I just wouldn't have done this work if I hadn't felt the urgency to reinvent my professional practice. In a way, Covid forced me to more clarity on what I do. Out of bad comes (some little) good.
