A decade of devastating Tory austerity was created in Tory-led Whitehall not Labour-led Town Halls. 60p in every pound stripped from local government was masterminded by Tory Prime Ministers in Downing Street and facilitated by the Lib Dems between 2010 & 2015.
Labour councils have been the first & last line of defence for communities against the devastation caused by a decade of lost opportunity and savage Tory cuts. We've also led the way with our trade union colleagues in campaigning against this failed Tory policy.
Labour councils are legally required to pass a balanced budget each year or risk Government appointed commissioners taking an axe to local services with a complete lack of accountability. Corbyn & McDonnell instructed Labour councils to ensure they passed a balanced budget.
The only way to bring an end to another decade of savage Tory austerity that will further decimate vital pulic services is to win power by electing a radically transformative Labour Government that is focussed on the hopes and concerns of voters across the country.
A note of advice to the new Momentum leadership - the Tories are our opponents, turn your attention, scrutiny & campaigning on them, instead of slide-tackling your own team. Together, in unity we can win power and change our country for the better.
There's nothing left-wing or socialist about undermining Labour councils, the only ones to benefit from that will be the Tories. Forward with unity, let's work together to take the fight to the Tories and elect a radical Labour Government. 🌹🌹🌹
