(1/9) The decision to close schools is one of the most disruptive and potentially inefficient measure that has been attempted to counter Covid19. @NahasNewman and many others have worked tirelessly to protect the rights of children against fact-resistant calls to isolate them.
(2/9) Sweden didn’t close schools. If this policy was detrimental to their health, this should manifest in Swedish Covid19 statistics. What does the facts tell us? So far, out of 2.4 million people, one person below the age of 20 has died with Covid19 (0,000042% mortality).
(3/9) Perhaps you are more concerned about teachers? There is already a wealth of research showing that children only rarely transmit Covid19 . Teachers are probably more likely to catch the virus outside of school.
(4/9) If that is not enough to put us at ease, lets return to the data. In the working age population of 6.5 million people, there has been 600 deaths (0.0093% mortality). If you consider this an unacceptable risk, we can halve it by directing teachers above 60 to stay at home.
(5/9) Sweden has 163,100 teachers. If they conform to the population-wide demographic pattern, 28,254 teachers would be eligible to self-isolate (17%). Compensating them would be a small price to pay to not deprive 2.4 million children of their education and social life.
(6/9) I would argue that the same logic probably applies to everyone in the working age population. If we help those with known comorbidities to self-isolate, the overwhelming majority could return to work safely and generate the resources we need to protect the risk groups.
(7/9) Some perspective- from week 11 to 25 Sweden recorded 5,335 deaths with Covid19 compared to all cause deaths of 30,040. It is near impossible to confirm the existence of the data below the black bar in the 2nd diagram. That speck of green represents all CV19 deaths under 50.
(8/9) Then imagine squeezing diagram 2 and 3 into diagram 1. Visually identifying the deaths among the under 50’s would require imagination rather than good eyesight.
(9/9) Hopefully this thread helps someone realize that the risk of opening schools is non-existent to children and negligible to teachers (if done responsibly). I sympathize with the families affected and would be concerned if I had children who foregone months of school for CV19
