Brutal police in Nairobi violently disrupted several peaceful marches urging constitutionalism & respect for human rights. The march coincided with the 30th anniversary of Saba Saba movement, which was critical in repealing Section 2A of the Constitution, allowing multipartyism.
Rights defenders from social justice centres in Nairobi organized the march to pile pressure on the government to act on human rights abuses -- many committed by rogue police – and provide for fundamental freedoms. They were to petition the President to act. @StateHouseKenya
However, shortly after most marches commenced at 7 am, police fired teargas, shot in the air, & arrested at least 8 right defenders, including Wilfred Olal & Editar Ochieng, now at Kariobangi and Kilimani police stations, respectively. Police are holding others at Kayole station.
But the organizers of the march had served police with a notice, a required by law. It’s uncertain why police broke up the peaceful march. Clearly, violent crackdowns by police, as witnessed before multipartyism, is worryingly becoming fixed.
