Not gonna bother to wrap that one. Moving onto evaluations for Carr, Brautigam and Cooke: Those aren't going to happen this year, Young says, bc of budget constraints and workload due to COVID.
Carr, Brautigam and Cooke all OK with this.
The process is going to be tweaked before next year's review. Young says there's room for improvement: Doesn't specify what.
That's the recommendation from her and Weaver, who are on that subcommittee. Rest of council has to support that before it happens.
Weaver: "It was very difficult last year" to do reviews. "It's clear that the process hasn't worked very well, on balance."
Again, no specifics. But the process "needs a thorough review, top to bottom." HR dept supports making changes.
Yates: Last year's process was not very good. We need to improve upon it.

WHY WASN'T IT GOOD???
Yates: "I'm a little reluctant to have no evaluation."
"I don't want to go 24 months without that kind of formal feedback" — congratulations, room for improvement, etc. — he says. Council should do something.
Friend: I'm obviously new to this. Have we ever skipped evaluations before? Is that allowed under the charter?
Weaver: No and yes. (It's not required by charter, and I don't think we've ever not done an evaluation)
Young: We've never been in the situation we are now.
Young: In our convo with one of our employees, they did imply that their colleagues in other cities don't get annual evaluations.
Friend: Why do we do them annually then?
Weaver: We needed to bring compensation up to parity with surrounding areas. And we also do merit increases. That's been one driver: The relationship between performance and salary. And the desire to create a feedback loop.
Wallach: I think 24 months without a formal review is too long.
I have been working since I was 17 and I have had exactly 0 performance reviews.
I mean, my editors at the newspaper told me when I fucked up. Does that count?
I guess that's because I've only worked in industries that don't give raises.
Long speech from Weaver. I spaced out. Sorry!
Which really sucks bc I think it addressed the issues with the process.
All I caught were the words "360 review" that included peers.
Long speech from Yates about BHP's review process.
So... I think we landed that some evaluation would be done, but maybe not in public and no raises...?
