Before we begin:
We don't cancel people.
We.
Don't.
Cancel.
People.
Unlesss they makes direct threats against someones life or property, we argue ideas. We don't cancel people.
That means anyone caught pressuring the network to fire @ShannonSharpe gets a block.
You heard me.
Shannon said Brees should retire because he said kneeling during the anthem was disrespectful and ignored the message about the police.
Brees missed the point. Fair enough.
Desean Jackson quoted Hitler supposedly saying Jews will extort America.
I mean, is it even close?
Now, I think I know what Shannons point was: The NFL has Tony Dungy smooth things over if a white player says something racist about black people, he wants to know who will help smooth things over now that a black player offended people. The idea is this....
Tony Dungy will help to ease the anger of black people if a white person says something racist, which gives white players a chance to apologize and overcome that mistake. He wants to know who will smooth things over so Desean Jackson can apologize and overcome his mistake.
Two points:
1. Identity politics always creates a mess and makes things worse. Even Shannon Sharpe who is smart, well educated, and well spoken got trapped here. It's impossible.
2. Cancel Culture and Identity politics will lead you to eventually contradict yourself. Always.
The way identity politics and cancel culture operates will force yoh to treat people who do similar with different standards, because identity politics pays attention to a persons race and sexuality rather then their charachter and what they actually did....
This means the first guy can do the same thing in similar circumstances as the second guy but get get way harsher (or way easier) consequences.
This is not fair and it's not right.
The right thing to do is stop playing Identity Politics and stop trying to Cancel people...
Abolishing Cancel culture will lower the stakes of social media (making it easier to both apologize and to forgive so people can be restored to the community) and abolishing Identity politics will make it easier for people to have fair standards.

PS
@ShannonSharpe has a brother named Sterling Sharpe, who had his career shortened due to a neck injury. When Shannon was inducted into the hall of fame he stopped his speech half way through to say this:
PPS/
@ShannonSharpe then goes on to ask them to look at his brothers career....during what is supposed to be Shannons OWN moment in the sun. Such is the charachter of Shannon Sharpe.
He is a great man.
He is also a good man.
PPS
So even though I disagree with him, I will stand by the CHARACTER of Shannon Sharpe.
now for real this time...

Except also that Sterling Sharpe really does actually 100% belong in the Hall of Fame and the fact he isn't there yet is tragedy.
