In this article, and y’day at the #Detroit Board of Police Comm’rs meeting, we kept hearing that “If the current policy was in place, this wouldn’t have happened.” I don’t buy this.
Yes, the policy restricts searches to Part 1 violent crimes and Home Invasion I. But #DPD has also used it for other things, like arson, damage to property, and threats against police after the policy was in place—not incl. in the def. of violent crimes.
Even if they followed the policy, mistakes can/will still happen. Why? The competence bar is extremely low: 
Also examiners are allowed to use “image editing software” which is a terrible idea for all the reasons Photoshopping evidence in a criminal case is a terrible idea.

Wayne County now requires their Prosecutor to review matches. So does she have specialized training in #facerecognition algorithms & forensic face matching?
Finally, at the Police Commissioners meeting yesterday, 20 of 27 public comments called for a ban on police #facerecognition. No community member spoke in support. Maybe let's listen to the people on this one...
