New Jersey is changing the title of county freeholder because it is an old word 
It's offensive, but also literally no one knows what it means
Not to cross threads here but perhaps ppl would know what it means if our national politics reporters had cut their teeth as local reporters.
Anyway, it's either 'offensive' and 'exclusionary' to ppl *or* no one knows what the hell it means.
The NYT did an explainer on the term freeholder in 1998, but the race angle was not mentioned because it is not a racist term and way back in 1998 editors, and not tik-tok reporters, ran the Paper of Record. nytimes.com/1998/05/31/nyr…
Time to stop using the word 'voter,' which harkens back to a time when
"Stop police violence against minorities."
"Message received! Starting Monday, all County Freeholders will be called County Commissioners!"
