I look forward to working alongside @GFColeman and Senator Whitmire to add very necessary reforms to the #SandraBlandAct next legislative session. These provisions, which would have held police accountable, were removed from the original bill. (Thread)
“After Whitmire removed much of the language related to police encounters... the bill passed both chambers. The version of the Sandra Bland Act signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott had become mostly a mental health and jail reform bill, and it lost support from Bland’s family.”
Now is the time to revisit this Act, & honor #SandraBland’s life by adding these measures to hold police accountable:
- implicit bias & racial profiling training
- banning choke holds
- increasing stop & search standards
- limiting arrests for Class C misdemeanors

“A state House race that hasn't been on any radar screens appears to be more competitive than anyone could have ever imagined in a heavily Republican district in East Texas where the Democrats hadn't fielded a candidate for two entire decades” capitolinside.com/watch-house102…

“Gobble has clearly been a superior candidate by every measuring standard - and she has a monopoly on the momentum with a campaign that's gone from prohibitive underdog to serious contender in a contest that could be a harbinger for a wave like no one has ever witnessed”

“But Schaefer unwittingly handed a potential opponent a nuclear weapon on a silver platter when he cast the only opposing vote in committee against a state budget that earmarked a massive amount for public education and property tax relief.”
To echo @JulieOliverTX, it doesn’t seem the GOP and their associates can stay out of trouble. Since 2012, Matt Schaefer has “accidentally” sponsored a white nationalist rally at the capital, his former chief of staff was charged with online solicitation of a minor under 14, (1/6)

Matt has a fascinating legislative history, which often has been inextricably intertwined with special interests, self interest, blatant sexism, or a mix of all three.
One year ago today, I sat in horror on my couch as I saw the stories pour in about a 2nd Texas mass shooting in less than a month. This time in Odessa. I felt helpless. I could not understand why we, as a state, had not taken the steps necessary to stop this violence. THREAD
When you’re not a politician tied to special interests, the solutions to gun violence, and so many other things, are clearly just waiting to be adopted. The research is in, the laws have saved lives in other states, & yet, we continue to see our legislators take no action. (2/)
Even worse, what I found in the place of the empathy, compassion, and action I expected from my elected official was callousness, partisanship, and an inability to leave political talking points. In the face of tragedy, we got a Twitter rant. (3/)
Watching the Trump rally happening in Tyler. My opponent is speaking on how the Democrats (me) are working harder than ever to flip his district. I appreciate the recognition!
If you’d like to join in on the hard work, we’ve got a phone bank happening every Wednesday & Friday!
Regardless of your political beliefs, we must recognize that the violent actions and language on display at the square in downtown Tyler today were completely unacceptable. #BlackLivesMatter#TylerTX

Violence is not how we create healthy public discourse.
Violence is not how we create a better world for our children.
Violence is not how we maintain our democracy.
Violence is not how we, as a city, speak our values- no matter what side of the political aisle you stand on.
We must do better. We must listen to our neighbors. We must show respect and dignity to our fellow Americans.
To the nonviolent protesters who came out today, thank you for your courage.
Thank you to @CNN and @Newsweek for covering our fight to change the name of Robert E. Lee high school. We are demanding the name change, not out of a desire to erase history nor to disrespect our fellow countrymen, but because we believe history deserves context. #TheTimeIsNow
