At one time I had prepared a USB pre-loaded with all manners of these raw, leftfield games, emulators all ready to go, dive in, no context. I'd gift them to friends who knew nothing of videogames, pure hearts. Thrown in the deep end, they did not even know it.
Few others in this camp just chase obscurity, there's no critical eye; or consume in mode of creepypasta surrealism. LSD: Dream Simulator is easy bc surrealism gives out to disengage, there's no consistent internal logic. But play to win his earlier Eastern Mind for a revelation!
Reason these games enlighten you onto truth of gaming, BTW, is they unapologetically convey an alien world for you to engage with, a twisted but parsable logic you must intuit to succeed. This is the process of all games, you play the algorithm, but here its aesthetically raw...
Captain Blood for Atari was a curious game that exemplfies this in its mechanical narrative; you're an alien captain of a ship flying around meeting other aliens, trying to forge pidgin communication through trial & error w ur iconographic language.
Forced to learn your own language, the only mechanics from which you can engage with the world, feel out its limit, as much as you learn theirs; metaphor for process of gaming itself, condensed into a mechanical microcosm, repeated as a series of puzzles. And how easy we learn.
