If you're young, just started your career, and are confused about what you're doing, here's my story from 7.5 years ago.

After quitting my first job at BYJUs in 2013, I decided to take a 1-yr break to figure out 'what next'. To survive in B'luru, I did a bunch of odd jobs 👇

📝 started tutoring a couple of French kids at a nearby apartment in the evenings; grew to 4 via WoM 😇

🚀 helped an ex-colleague get his offline coaching biz off the ground on weekends

✍ started freelance writing; my first article was for @trakin, went viral acc. to @8ap)

Meanwhile, startups had started getting attention. Bangalore was the hub! 🤩

YourStory (YS) and PluggdIn (now NextBigWhat) were the only two media entities that really cared about Startups back then.

I'd make time to attend startup events - mostly by YS

+
I remember meeting Joe Gebbia* at the YS office (which was a 3.5 BHK on the 2nd floor of a 3-story building right behind Toit in Indiranagar).

40-50 of us crammed in a small hall to listen to *the co-founder of Airbnb - one of the biggest startup stories from the US. 🔥

+
After a while, having attended several meetups, I got to know each and every member of the (then small) team at YS.

I remember @SharmaShradha offered me a lift back from one such conf in Taj Yeshwanthpur in Oct, 2013.

We stopped for an icecream at a Häagen-Dazs in 1-MG mall.

This is where she asked me to join YourStory to help with community building.

I already knew the team members + having started a startup while still in college I was massively curious about startups. This decision was a no-brainer.

I joined YS as a consultant in Nov, '13.

+
I started helping with the community, then went to do my favourite thing - write about startups. (100+ stories - yourstory.com/author/abhashk…)

Then I was (sort of) forced into Social Media + Marketing.
This was the best thing that happened to me. I learnt Marketing on-the-job. 😍

+
First it was just me, then I hired someone else, then someone else and by the time I left YS in Feb, 2017 I was leading an 8-person Digital Marketing team at a media co with millions of readers. 😇

At YS, I helped organize 100+ small events/big confs.

It all worked out fine.

The point is many of you young folks may be confused, anxious, maybe without jobs. 2020 is brutal.

If you don't have responsibilities, it's OK to take a break. Internet's your playground. Try building for the internet. The tools are aplenty.🙏🏻

YOU WILL SURVIVE 💪🏽
On my 1st ever podcast, I talk about this journey and much more...

I discuss my time at @springroleinc, including Springworks' recent tryst going remote and the 5W1H of how we're handling the transition + a list of our learnings from the move.
