These are my 10 takeaways:
This isn’t because of lack of rigor from schools, but because kids lack motivation to learn. They’re detached from the process.
They should be able to follow their curiosity and choose what to learn instead of following an old and arbitrary curriculum.
School as we know it was created during the Industrial Revolution to train kids to be assembly line workers. Since then, a lot has changed; but not schools.
Kids who are in school right now will likely have jobs that don’t exist yet. And we don’t know exactly how those will look like.
Kids should be flexible and able to constantly reinvent themselves.
You can’t force kids to learn, you can inspire them though.
That’s why the best teachers are the ones who do a good job at selling the idea of learning. (Being entertaining is helpful too)
We don’t need teachers to deliver information anymore. Google can do that better. We need teachers to be facilitators.
Teachers should:
- motivate and inspire students
- provide space and opportunities to create
- provide tools to make the whole process easier
Instead of obsessing about the curriculum, schools should make sure every kid is able to:
- learn things on their own
- figure things out
- create/build stuff
We need more independent, creative thinkers. Not more robots
- Be able to unlearn a bunch of things
- Use what you learned to create something
- Leverage the internet to share and publish your work
- Kids are extremely aware of their interests and strengths
- Kids had a lot of experience creating (and dealing with failure)
- Kids want to keep learning (They should be addicted to it)
