This is a very important picture of an important element of Tower Hamlets history, WW2 shrapnel damage from a Luftwaffe bomb
It can be found on the corner of Chamber street and Mansell street E1
It is not protected in any way from re-development
TH was heavily bombed in 2 wars

People forget now that bomb attacks in the 1st world war also caused heavy damage and loss of life (18 children killed in a school in Poplar)
But most damage was in WW2, one reason why E14 has few historic buildings is because so many destroyed

I bought recently The London County Council Bomb Damage Maps to see what damage caused locally

The darker the colour the worse the damage, some views of the Isle of Dogs from the book
As an important industrial & dock area within range of Luftwaffe airfields the area was heavily bombed
The circles are V1/V2 rocket landing locations

So why is this important?
The wall was not protected from re-development and @HistoricEngland would not list the wall so we could have lost it
Fortunately the applicant chose to protect the wall and will preserve it
Not everybody is so civically minded

Tower Hamlets Council do not have a central record of other war damaged sites like this (I asked, see below) so we cannot be sure of losing other historic reminders of the past
Do you know of any sites in Tower Hamlets where you can see war damage? (other then Mudchute farm)
6/
It would be good to have a list and then see if any additional planning protection can be added to them to preserve them for future generations
PS I should disclose that my German grandfather was a Luftwaffe pilot in the war, reconnaissance & transport planes not bombers !
