#HistoryKeThread This first photo of a Gîkûyû elder was taken by William S. Routledge in circa 1903. Note how the dress differs from that of warriors of the community in the following pic, also taken by Routledge.
According to historian and former politician Dr. Mukaru Ng’ang’a, the Agîkûyû from Kîhûmbûini (Murang’a) were among those most notorious for ambushing and attacking European visitors and their caravans.
Dr. Ng’ang’a gave an account by pioneer military man Col. Richard Meinertzhagen, the man who killed Koitalel arap Samoei.

According to Meinertzhagen, once Gîkûyû warriors captured a European who had ventured into their country, tied his hands and stripped him naked.
They then made him lie down on the ground, facing upwards.
As he was uncircumcised, the Agîkûyû warriors were not supposed to kill him. So they called upon some of their women to walk over to where he lay and urinate on him.
According to Meinertzhagen, the white man was urinated on until he died.
