This is a massive scandal, perhaps the biggest so far under this government.
The secret, under-the-counter contracts given to really weird companies to deliver PPE and other pandemic services.
It needs more exposure.

In writing this column, I was reminded of something, but couldn't quite place it.
It came to me this morning: military contracting during the reign of George I.
Extremely lucrative government monopolies, granted to intermediaries, who merely placed orders with manufacturers.
Some of the richest families in England made their fortunes this way. Now, under Boris Johnson, the practice seems to have been revived.

We rightly lament the unfunded liabilities of the nuclear industry, whose clean-up costs (from 1st and 2nd generation reactors) the public must pay.
But the unfunded liabilities dumped on us by the fossil fuel industry are MUCH greater. Example 1:

In this case, the investors simply walk away from wells leaking methane and other pollutants. There are similar stories the world over.
The same goes for opencast coal mines. The owners take their massive profits, and leave us with a gigantic hole.

That's here in the UK. It's even worse in many other countries. But there's hardly a word about it in the press.
Dire as these unfunded liabilities are, they are tiny by comparison to the biggest legacy issue of all:

Greenhouse gases.

When I was a boy, the idea that all people deserve respect was attacked in the media as "do-gooding".
When I was a young man, they called it "political correctness".
Today they call it "cancel culture".
Whatever name they give it, they hate the notion of universal respect.
"Cancel culture" is used by the media to describe 2 very different things.
1. Stamping out legitimate discussion and debate
2. Calling for other people to be respected
By deliberately blurring this line, some commentators seek to defend their privilege against cultural change.
For example, "cancel culture" has been used to describe the reaction to David Starkey's racism. It has become a boo-term used to defend racism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, just as "political correctness", "virtue signalling" and "do-gooding" were used.

There's lots of common ground between feminism and trans rights, but in the media, division is emphasised.
Let's find the common ground between all our struggles, which are all sides of the same die.

Sexism, transphobia, racism, economic exclusion, environmental injustice, intergenerational theft: a struggle against one is a struggle against all.
Wealth and power seek to atomise and rule.
We resist effectively when we stand together in solidarity.
Love is the value that should govern public life. If that sounds ridiculous, it shows only how far from our interests public life has strayed. By showing love to each other, we start building the society in which we wish to live.
