Geography @MemorialU is remote this fall! How will it work? Here is the plan for each course offering, how much time is required to meet in person (if any), and any other useful info for deciding your fall 2020 course load. Here we go!
@memorialhss @CITL_MemorialU @MUN_Science
@MemorialU @memorialhss @CITL_MemorialU @MUN_Science First year! #GEOG1050 is our totally rad first year intro to all things Geography, which is, it turns out, all things! There are four sections, w/JFinnis, @lynch_111, @engelmonica, & @Paul_m_Ledger. All have *optional* synchronous sessions weekly if you want time w/class IRL.
Second year! #GEOG2001 Cultural Geography w/ @DeanBavington will be completely *asynchronous*. In other words, do it on your own time to fit with your schedule. Learn about nature & culture, colonialism, place, identity, global cultures of commodities, media, tourism, oh my.
Physical Geography #GEOG2102 w/ Norm Catto will have *optional* synchronous sessions and asynchronous content. How do climate, earth, water, and vegetation all interact to shape the patterns we see in natural systems across the globe? Find out here!
Intro to Geographic Information Sciences #GEOG2195 w/ Chris Cogan will have *optional* synchronous sessions. This is an intro to cartography, remote sensing, and GIS, with an emphasis on application (how do we use those things?). Srsly, if you want a job, you gotta take GIS.
Economic Geography #GEOG2302 w/ @charlimather will mix asynchronous materials online & engaging synchronous discussions, w/ particular focus on how COVID-19 may reshape the world economy, globalization, and the impact on the geographies of the economy. Just small talk, NBD.
Natural Resources #GEOG2425 w/ ML Aastrup has *optional* synchronous sessions & asynchronous content online. How do politics, economics, technology, culture influence decisions about resources and the "natural" world? How are we messing it all up, & what are we doing right? Gulp.
Third year! Wait. We have EIGHT third year courses? Please hold for Tweeter coffee break.
Third year! Climatology w/J Finnis has *optional* synchronous sessions & asynchronous content. How do energy, moisture, & atmospheric circulation drive global climate patterns? Why is the Labrador Current the best & Gulf Stream is kind of rude? (Ok that's a bit #nlwx specific)
Biogeography #GEOG3140 w/@rangeshifts has *optional* synchronous virtual field labs & asynchronous content. Learn why species live where they do, when they do. Do you hate baby animals? If not, take this course. If you don't take it, does that mean you hate them? Hard to say.
Field Methods #GEOG3228 w/N Catto is req'd for all majors. Four *optional* synchronous sessions ~once/month. Learn how geographers practice research (virtually) &methods used. NC basically knows everything about NL landscapes*. Don't miss out!
*This tweet was not approved by NC.
Intro to GIS #GEOG3260 w/Cogan. Wait, didn't we do this one already? Nope! This course focuses on spatial data input, structures, management, integration, analysis, & output. Optional synchronous. This is the nitty gritty good stuff for learning how to apply GIS to real issues.
Community & Regional Planning & Development #GEOG3350 w/@lynch_111 will have *optional* synchronous sessions & asynchronous content. Learn about planning theories, techniques, & approaches. Understand who is involved &how development happens. What would you do w/Churchill Square?
Globalization of Food #GEOG3420 w/@charlimather will have 1 *required* synchronous class/week, filled w/ discussions focused on how COVID-19 changes the way we eat, grow, and access food. Will it be more safe? Sustainable? Secure? How will supply chains change? Now I'm hungry...
International Migration #GEOG3620 w/@ypsherm has *optional* synchronous class every 2nd week & asynchronous content. Global movement of populations, borders & immigration control, refugees & asylum, citizenship, belonging, & place making. This is not dusty content*, this is now.
*no one has dusty content, come on!
International Political Geography #GEOG3800 w/@rubbishmaker sure isn't dusty either! Classes are *required* synchronous w/🔥discussions on the history of geopolitics, state and statecraft, decolonization and nationalism, global tech, & enviro security. Big bro may be watching. 👀
Fourth year! Natural Hazards: People and Environments #GEOG4060 w/Catto. There are no hazards without people. How do they develop? How do we manage, respond, plan for them? Case studies: biological, medical, climatological, geophysical, hydrological, meteorological. Watch out!
Research Seminar in Resources #GEOG4410 w/ Gerald Singh will have *one required* synchronous class and optional asynchronous classes. Learn through a research project focused on resource sectors: energy, fisheries, forests, lands, air, &water. We sure have all of that in NL.
Historical Geography #GEOG4600 w/@DeanBavington has *required* synchronous classes. How do geographies of the past link to the present? History of geog'y, relevance to imperialism & state power, changing relation'p b/w humans &enviro. Helloooo #WaybackWednesday!
Conservation in Biology & Geography #GEOG4650 (also #BIOL4650) w/Evan Edinger is *required* synchronous lectures and virtual labs. How can bio & geog principles be applied to conserving biological diversity given that humans wreck everything? I may have paraphrased that one.
Finally, to cap it all off w/our capstone course: Geography in Action #GEOG490A w/@toxiclegacies- the first half of a full yr course & all synchronous. The class tackles a research problem for a NL client/NGO. Learn the practice of geography, in prep for your next big life thing.
And that's our undergrad remote offerings for Fall 2020 @MemorialU! Read schedule and a/synchronous details here: mun.ca/geog/courses_d… & descriptions here: mun.ca/geog/Fall_2020…. Tweeter out. 🎤
