Our daily update is published. Both tests completed (758k) and new cases (65K) were near all-time highs. States reported 855 deaths, in line with the higher level we saw last week.
This chart makes clear what has been true all along: Different parts of the country have experienced this pandemic in different ways at different times.

After experiencing relatively fewer deaths in the spring, the South has entered a new phase.
Hospitalizations are approaching their all-time high, including the spring outbreak. (Our data coverage back then included the Northeast’s hotspots, but was not complete.)
Alabama set a new record for deaths (47), breaking their previous record, which was set yesterday. Oklahoma set a new record for cases today, breaking 1000 for the first time. Both states also set new records for hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
If you’ve seen the news that the Federal government has re-routed hospital data into a new system at HHS, we do not think that our states-based data compilation will be affected by the change.
We support more transparency and hope all the HHS data will be released.

That said, there’s a reason we built a process to capture national numbers that doesn’t rely on our national government.
Today, we also published updated data definitions to help with the interpretation of this unusually complex data.
