Twitter Heist explained: There was a major Twitter hack, many verified accounts posted a basic Bitcoin scam and many people fell for it and gifted the hacker's hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in BTC. Twitter temporarily restricted posting for all verified users.
At least that's how it is being promoted and they only made a couple thousand dollars in BTC but this is the internet & everything needs to be dramatized for clout.

There is no official indication Twitter was the root of the problem yet, however, it must be noted third party apps are hacked periodically making it likely infiltrators possibly targeted specific Social Media Management tools used by verified accounts.
The @TwitterSupport team is currently investigating the problem and has taken measures to minimize the reach and damage by the hackers.
Earlier we noted there was a scam link making the rounds that directs users to a compromised website that allowed hackers to take control of people's Twitter accounts. It may be unrelated but stands as an example of methods that exist to hack an account.
