Tonight I’m presenting the findings of a fascinating poll from @MattSingh_ on a special ITV programme presented by @ragehomaar Stephen Lawrence- Has Britain changed. Here are some of the stats exclusive in Guardian 👇theguardian.com/world/2020/jul…
Depressing top lines that show, as you might expect, most people think there is a fair amount or great deal of racism - but also that more people think things have stayed the same or got worse than improved. And this is more pronounced for BAME respondents. But... 1/
As @sundersays told me -people are quite reluctant to point to progress for good reasons. The type overt racism from 80s/90s may have changed, he says, but people want politicians to focus on everyday experience of racism in 2020 & believe there remains urgency to address that 2/
He said young people in particular get frustrated by people pointing to for eg National Front “thugs” of the past as a way of minimising the experience of the present. And he says expectations have risen. 3/
Moreover institutional racism - and other forms of discrimination- may be worse in many ways in modern society. Was interested in @BZephaniah arguing yesterday abt his fears that some racists of past now wear suits and run things. Listen if you haven’t! /4 theguardian.com/news/audio/202…
Poll also shows that people think Muslim men and women and black men and women worst hit by discrimination /5
Tonight’s poll from @MattSingh_ at Number Cruncher Politics has loads of fascinating figures not out til later, and because of size of BAME sample being so big can divide up by race. Shows how different the black experience is quite unique. /6
So tune it at 8pm on ITV to find out more and watch discussion with @ragehomaar John Barnes @officialbarnesy Met Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball, Stephen’s brother Stuart Lawrence @sal2nd @ShaunBaileyUK @DavidOlusoga and others #HasBritainchanged
