there's plenty of problems in the comparison, but when a country starts targeting a population for genocide, beating the drums on ethnonationalist revanchism and upholding a leader cult, we shouldn't be surprised or outraged if people compare it to the most famous example of same
there are clear similarities in Xi-ist China to fascist politics, both German and Japanese; studying them (and even more so Soviet politics) in order to deepen our understanding of what might come next is not a bad idea
people who will happily (and correctly) declare Trump an aspiring fascist will tut-tut you to death if you say the same of the leadership putting an ethnic minority in concentration camps
