@RagingSpaniard @dreamboum The Moai of Easter Island were actually in ruins before being restored in the 90s. The effort was largely lead and funded by a Japanese company. In return Japan is the only other place on earth with their own Moai recognized by the people of Easter Island.

@RagingSpaniard @dreamboum In general Moai just seem to be popular in Japan as a symbol of a mysterious far off, ancient tropical paradise. And also just for their inherent appealing look.
@RagingSpaniard @dreamboum Nowadays Moai have become synonymous with Japan too. For instance in Bangkok, if I see a restaurant with a bunch of Moai out front, I just know it must be Japanese haha. Probably an Osaka style Izakaya. I never really questioned that logic until now!
