Never forget that in the Japanese version of Capcom's Quiz & Dragons (1994) the Fighter isn't just not wearing pants, he looks like he's straightup bottomless!
Ok actually it's only in the select screen. He's actually wearing a loin cloth in-game. I think they just figured you wouldn't see him below the waist for the portrait art, so they had some fun with that drawing 😅
Here's a comparison of the select screens from the US and JPN versions of Quiz and Dragons. The JPN version actually came out 2 years later and had extra gameplay and new art for the characters and bosses!
When you compare the US (1992) and Japanese (1994) versions of Quiz and Dragons, it's like night and day. The first iteration of the game has nice, but fairly standard art. The JPN update marks Capcom hitting their stride and truly defining their killer, inimitable house style.
1994 was a very special year for Capcom. I always loved their games from long before that. But 94 was the year both Darkstalkers and Children of the Atom dropped and lemme tell ya, those changed my life. I'd never seen ANYTHING that COOL before!
Quietly, alongside Darkstalkers and X-Men COTA, in this blessed year of 1994, Quiz & Dragons made its humble debut in Japan. And hot damn!!! Look at this art!!

Quiz and Dragons had such COOL characters!! Such daring and charming takes on the standard Fighter, Amazon, Wizard and Ninja that we'd all come to know and love and expect of games by the mid 90s.

I'd like to return to this comparison image again. Look at how wildly different the characters feel while still being the same characters. Capcom didn't change their core designs, they just drew them in a cooler style! This is something that 90s Capcom did better than everyone!
What a difference 2 years can make! The original drawing is good, but the updated one is GREAT. Much more confident! Cooler pose and proportions. Clearer composition. Much more volumetric. More information while being less busy looking. It's so ELEGANT!

Capcom's Quiz and Dragons had the coolest dragons too!

The art of Quiz and Dragons (1994) felt like it paved the way for Capcom's forgotten gem Warzard (1996)
#クイズアンドドラゴンズ #Warzard
The dragons in Quiz and Dragons were also stylistically prescient of the chunky, meaty, super stylish dragons of future Breath of Fire titles down the road (III, IV and Dragon Quarter)
1994 was also the year Capcom released Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom, Alien vs Predator and Armored Warriors. What a standout year! They didn't just ride the billion dollar coattails of Street Fighter 2. They parlayed that success into so many other explosions of creativity!
