One underremarked upon facet of the Substack phenomenon is how having it as a BATNA will transform negotiations between superstar (and midlist) talent and more traditional employers of writers.

Some orgs are enjoying a bit of a free lunch right now, which is going to get priced.
You can only say “Tough economy; you’re already high on the salary scale; media is contracting and you’re lucky to have this job” so many times when people can look at publicly available comps and say “Uh I think my Substack predicted outcome is +/- $450k why is my salary $85k.”
“This sounds a bit fantastic.”

A spiritually similar dynamic holds in startup employment and *everyone* knows it. Anyone sufficiently mispriced by the market can credibly threaten a YC application; this broadly raises compensation of everyone who’d plausibly be accepted.
I am also a bit amused that the companies which were happy for years to have employees do effectively uncompensated work gardening their personal social media followings/brands to find more eyeballs/subscribers might find that they taught people a skill that made them dangerous.
